THE CORRECT CROSS COUNTRY SKI
Basic selection
Generally one decides between classic cross country skis or skating skis. Skating skis are used with a similar technique to ice skating shoes. We recommend this style of ski for the more experienced person that wishes to get going a little quicker. The more classical cross country ski takes care of a wide range of skiers and abilities who ski mostly on the groomed tracks. The difference here is between skis with a mechanical kick zone (eg.fish scale structure) and skis with a base that must be prepared with wax according to the snow conditions. Today the most sold waxless skis models, can be sorted into the Classical, the not so long Short Cut and the even shorter Nordic Cruiser catergories.
Classic Cross Country Skis
Wax Skis
Suitable for the advanced skier on the classical groomed tracks. Take note when purchasing that these skis must be regularly prepared in the kick zone with klister or kick wax.
Waxless skis
Now days the most common ski to be found within hobby cross country skiers. The biggest advantage lays with the mechanical kick zone, which prevents sliding backwards on the snow but has only a minimal effect on gliding. There are 2 groups of waxless skis. The nordic cruiser and the classical waxless ski. The nordic cruiser provides the skier with a wider ski and a safer feeling of balance. This type of ski is recommended to skiers that do not reach higher speeds and that venture every now and then into tracks that have not been prepared. They are also much shorter than the classical waxless ski and are therefore more agile. The classic waxless ski have become shorter over the years and are offered as short cut versions.
Skating Skis
Skating skis are taken shorter than the classic short cut cross country skis. They have no kick zone and are used in a style similar to ice skating.

Binding system
There are two binding systems, the SNS system from salomon and the NNN system from Rottefella. Which one you choose depends on the shoe that you purchase or allready have. Please take note that the SNS system also comes in an SNS Pilot system which provides more stability and 2 axes. With an SNS shoe you can use every SNS binding however an SNS Pilot shoe requires the compatible SNS binding.
