THE CORRECT POLE LENGTH
Here you will find according to the type of sport the formular to calculate the correct length of pole needed. Generally the pole length is measured from the tip to the grip ends. As the effective pole length varies up to 2 cm due to the type of grip, a measurement up to the grips band would make sense however most manufacturers measure the complete pole. The optimal pole length is to be calculated by body height X the factor from the tables below. beginners should tend towards the shorter pole. The longer option can be considered when more power and balance has been developed.
Nordic Walking:
As a general rule we recommend body height X 0,66 - 0,68.
Cross Country Classic:
As a general rule we recommend body height X 0,83 - 0,85. For those who do not wish to calculate, up to the mid shoulder.
Cross Country Skating:
As a general rule we recommend body height X 0,87 - 0,90. For those who do not wish to calculate, up to the ear lobes.
Alpine skiing:
As a general rule we recommend body height X 0,68. A further method to find the correct length is: Turn the pole up side down and hold the pole under the basket, the upper arm and forearm should make a right angle (90°). It can be a little over 90°. In the fun park the pole length can be shorter than the right angle.
Hiking:
For hiking poles the same rule is to be applied as for the alpine skiing poles. However here it is not so exact as hiking poles are telescopic and are individually adjustable. The poles are often set a bit shorter for walking up hills and a little longer for going downhill.
All these calculations should be considered as each person has individual preferences. One prefers shorter and the next a bit longer. For cross country skiing the different leverage, such as arm lebgth, the persons technique and the physical strength play an additional role.
OUR TIP:
Take note that a pole that is too long can be eventually shortened by removing the grip and cutting the shaft down. The opposite effect is not possible. If not certain then purchase the longer pole.
